Cafe Pesto, Hilo Bay

3.5/5

We went here because my husband is a fan of Guy Fieri's Diners Drive Ins and Dives.

We ordered the Farmers Market vegetables saffron risotto, Heritage Pork Bolognese and the Luau Personal Wood Fired Pizza. The risotto was perfectly cooked, with roasted red peppers, caper olives, rainbow chard, artichoke and mushroom.

The Bolognese arrived with a strip of pork on top which my son devoured...with slightly under seasoned Bolognese in a red wine marinara with perfectly al dente and very tasty, basil linguini.

The Luau Pizza, which was a DDD recommendation was the biggest disappointment...the pork itself was tasty, but the overall taste was not an 'oh my goodness, this is amazing' kind of taste...you know, the kind that Guy Fieri experiences on the show! The pizza dough was flavorless and had no 'chew' whatsoever and the rest of the ingredients were meh.

Service was fine, competent and efficient but not the usual effusive Hawaiian spirit that we have come to expect, except they delivered the wrong food to our table - they brought us the seafood risotto by accident - which by all accounts, they couldn't have used once we had already dug into it, and instead of letting it be at the table, or asking us if we wanted to keep it, they actually came and took it away in somewhat of a hurry! They were deeply apologetic of course. No harm done. It was just odd that they whisked away the food without giving us the option to see if we wanted to eat it, since we had already started to (and the bite I had was absolutely delicious!)

Would definitely go back to try some of the other pizzas and get my own helping of the incredibly delicious seafood risotto, which I only had one bite of, but it was more memorable than anything else that we ordered.
